Drilling Muds

The records need to be examined to determin wheather oil-based and or water-based drilling muds have been utilised in the drilling of the subsea wells. If there are the oil-based muds normally they will be sealed within the annuli. This is in preference to circulating and disposal, with the cost estimate prepared accordingly. 

Subsea Wells Drill Cuttings

Thequantity of drill cuttings which exist around the subsea wells and the impact on removal of the subsea wells and wellhead protection structure need to be quantified. Disposal of drill cuttings piles on the seabed is an area currently receiving significant attention by the industry. At the present time the preferred option where oil based muds have been used is to leave te drill cutting pile undisturbed. This avoids the environmental impact of contaminants being disturbed through removal of cuttings.
